Despite producing just 0.04% of global emissions, Malawi is among The Global Climate Index’s top five countries to be impacted by climate change. Last year Cyclone Freddy ravaged the country, resulting in the loss of homes, crops, and livelihoods. Women in the communities where MicroLoan Foundation works were among those severely affected.
Along with the climate emergency, already poor communities have been pushed into spiralling poverty due to Covid, ongoing food insecurity and increased cost of living. Add to that an extremely volatile economy, and the poorest families have been left without any safety net.
For many women Cyclone Freddy was the final straw which forced them to turn to desperate measures including prostitution to feed their families.
MicroLoan Foundation provides women with substitute income generation through training and loans to start sustainable businesses. Will you donate today, and stop women selling their bodies in order to provide for their families?
Women endure dangerous situations, face aggressive clients, non-payment, and the risk of unprotected encounters puts them at risk of contracting HIV and AIDS, a disease still highly prevalent in Malawi.
We need your help to prevent this from happening, please donate today.
Due to its sensitive nature, it is difficult to find reliable data to understand the scope of the problem. However, according to a recent article in The Guardian, ‘the number of women working in prostitution has “almost tripled” since Cyclone Freddy.’
Our hope is that our work is stopping women from having to take these types of detrimental and drastic measures to survive.
With your help we can support more women in the poorest communities to find alternative livelihoods to support their families. This is why it is important for us to grow our outreach, but we need your help.
