Communications and Marketing Manager

Location: Homebased/Remote – South Africa (candidates from Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe will be considered)

Reports to: Director of Fundraising & Communications

Salary: TCC ZAR 415,000-550,000 inc. 13th cheque ($22,000 – $29,000) per annum dependent on experience and location

Contract Type: Full-time 40 hours per week Monday to Friday, Permanent

About MicroLoan Foundation

MicroLoan Foundation is a women’s empowerment and poverty alleviation organisation supporting women in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa. By providing them with financial literacy, business training, on-going support, and small affordable loans, we help these women to start small businesses for themselves. The organisation has social microfinance operations in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and is due to launch in South Africa in 2025. The charity head office is based in the UK with charitable arms in USA and Australia.

As we continue to grow, we are looking for an experienced and creative Communications and Marketing Manager to join our team and help us further amplify our impact.

Role Overview

This is a global role focussed on fundraising and raising the profile of MicroLoan Foundation. As the Communications and Marketing Manager, you will play a pivotal role in driving our communications and marketing strategies across both digital and traditional platforms. You will be responsible for managing our websites, social media and content creation for both digital and print materials, and ensuring that our brand is consistently communicated across all channels and raising funds through direct marketing and digital campaigns.

You will form an integral part of the Fundraising and Communications department and report to the Director of Fundraising and Communications in the UK. The role will work closely with the UK-based fundraising team and organisation’s senior management team to ensure that all communications align with the charity’s mission, values, and objectives. Your expertise in content creation, marketing, and brand management will help position MicroLoan Foundation as a leader in its field.

Key Responsibilities

Website Management & Digital Marketing:

  • Manage websites (UK, USA and Australia) front-end and back end, ensuring they are user-friendly, up-to-date, optimised and integrated with other digital tools.
  • Work with external vendors, developers and volunteers, as necessary, to troubleshoot issues, implement enhancements and automations to improve efficiency.
  • Monitor website performance using analytics and key performance indicators (KPIs), adjusting strategies to drive traffic, engagement, and conversions. (SEO)
  • Develop and execute social media strategies across MicroLoan Foundation’s platforms in UK, USA and Australia to grow engagement, increase followers, and amplify the charity’s voice.

Content Creation & Design (Digital & Print):

  • Lead the creation of engaging content across digital platforms (website, social media, email campaigns) and traditional marketing materials (direct mail, print brochures, reports, posters).
  • Design high-quality content using design tools such as InDesign, Photoshop, and Premier Pro to produce visually compelling assets for online and offline use.
  • Create impactful multimedia content, including videos, graphics, reports, presentations and newsletters. Act as the guardian of the charity’s brand, ensuring brand consistency and alignment in all communications, marketing materials, and public-facing content.

Campaigns & Fundraising:

  • Develop and execute targeted campaigns designed to acquire new donors across multiple channels, including postal mail, email, social media, and digital platforms.
  • Use analytics and data to tailor campaigns to specific donor demographics and maximize response rates.
  • Focus on generating new leads through creative marketing initiatives, such as online fundraising, partnership opportunities and personalised approaches.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all supporters and prospects using MicroLoan’s database eTapestry in-line with Data Protection regulations.
  • Support outreach for events and converting participants to donors, including a flagship fundraising event that involves over 200 coaches around the world.

Stakeholder Engagement & Media Relations:

  • Draft articles, press releases, speaker content, media statements, and other communications materials to promote the charity’s work.
  • Identify, apply for and implement media appeals and awards (such as BBC Radio 4, BBC Lifeline, Financial Times Appeal, Evening Standard, Telegraph, The Charity Awards and other).

Strategy & Planning:

  • Lead the development and execution of comprehensive communications and marketing strategies that drive awareness, engagement, and support for the charity’s mission.
  • Set clear goals for appeals and campaigns, tracking performance using data analytics and reporting results to senior leadership.

Budget & Reporting:

  • Manage the communications and marketing budget, ensuring that resources are used efficiently.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a flair for crafting engaging content for different audiences.
  • Proven experience in a management level communications or marketing role, with a strong emphasis on fundraising communications/marketing.
  • Experience in working with fundraising teams to develop and execute integrated marketing campaigns.
  • Expertise in using content management systems (CMS) for website management and optimisation – ideally WordPress.
  • Excellent visual content creation skills. Advanced proficiency in design software including Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Premier Pro for creating digital and print materials.
  • Strong understanding of digital marketing tools, including SEO, email marketing, social media, and automation software.
  • Experience in managing and maintaining brand consistency across different channels and materials.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to analyse data and use digital analytics tools to optimise performance and inform decision-making.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience with video production and editing – or willingness to learn.
  • Background in nonprofit communications or an understanding of the charity sector.
